My Kowhaiwhai Pattern

My Kowhaiwhai Pattern
By Lily

Last term in He Kakano we started painting
kowhaiwhai and their meanings. Kowhaiwhai are
a Traditional Maori pattern. We all had to create a
piece of artwork that showed at least one
kowhaiwhai pattern. This is what I made.

The purple diamond shapes are myself,
with my wild personality. The green diamonds inside the purple ones is my
heart inside of all of my wacky personality.
The blue swirls are my family supporting me
for whatever I do. The pink and yellow triangles
are my challenges, they are always there but I
have to work my way through them.
I made this design to show my family
and I and how me might have some challenges but we will always get through them together.

Camp Letter

20 November 2018

Dear Mum,

Thank you for coming on camp and dedicating your time! The thing I enjoyed the most was the
hike. It was fun because there were so many people around and a cool atmosphere.
My favorite meal was the burgers, because I haven't had them in a while.

My favourite activity was the Squawk Squad because we had to walk up steep stairs and
find morse codes to figure it out. I also enjoyed the river crossing. My biggest challenge
was the water activity because my fingers were getting cold and I was getting drenched.

My question for you is what was your favourite activity?
Thank you for coming and spending lots of time on cooking food, and helping with activities

Ngā mihi
Yours sincerely

Lily

Descriptive Writing

At the moment in class, we have been writing on descriptive writing. We have been using pictures to give us ideas of what to write about. Here is my work.

Bring Your Pet To School Day!

Hi, my name is Apple, and today was bring your pet to school day. So I brought along Terry!
When I was walking to school with Terry, sadly I created traffic jams.
There was a lot of calling out and tooting of horns. Terry and I had to quicken our pace to ease the problem. When I got to school my teacher was quite alarmed, and all of the children crowed around Terry, as his footsteps thudded around the class!

Where was I going fit Terry amongst all of these other pets? How was I going to feed him?
He could eat any of these kids pets for morning tea! Even his footsteps created a shudder through class. But to my relief, Terrys best friend arrived at school just as the bell went to ring. Both of them filled half the playground!

When Terry and I started to walk to class from morning tea, the principle quicky paced her way up to us and said, “EXCUSE ME. A dinosaur is not an appropriate animal to bring to school or... Should I say, creature, to bring to school!” “No, you call him a creature you should call him Terry,” I replied. “Well then.. You must take him home this instant!”
She told me. So I walked Terry home and apologised to Terry for the rude words he had heard
the principal say.

Terry is my pet dinosaur, but the school obviously isn't ready for him!

My Bird Report

Introduction Image result for kereruImage by FlamingText.com
The Kereru is a New Zealand bird also known as the New Zealand pigeon This bird is a really well-known bird.

What Does It Look Like
Kererū are big birds,  they are actually one of the largest pigeons in the world.
They weigh about 650g and are around 50 cm long. It has a multicolor greyish back,
with a white `singlet`. On its back, wing, head and tail feathers you can also see colors
such as purple, green and blue. Their feet and beak are a light brown and red color also
they have red eyes.

Where does it live
The Kereru lives mostly in the forests. The Kereru is a native animal which means it only lives
in New Zealand. They can also be found in parks and gardens.

What does it eat
In the winter it can fly up to 25 km an hour to gardens to feed, not just on fruit, but on flowers,
native trees, broom, willow, guava, and privet. In the forest the love to eat flowers leaves and
berries.

Breeding
In spring, Male kereru show off to the female kereru with amazing flying displays.
Kereru build a very flimsy nest of twigs for their one egg. At the bottom of the nest,
it is so weak you would be surprised it didn't fall through. Kereru care for their chicks a lot.
While the chick is small they feed it on milk they produce in their stomach,
then later on fruit pulp.

Threats.
Loss of habitat because they don't have enough forest/trees to live in. Their eggs and nestlings are at risk of dying because of stoats, black rats, possums, and feral cats because they eat the chicks and eggs.                                                       By Lily

All Of My Quick Writes

We have been working on quick writes! this is where you are given a topic and you have to write about it (a writing prompt) also you only have ten minutes to write this. You must have 4-6 sentences.❤

Tomato Pulp

As I opened my door out to town, all I saw was this red gloopy stuff. So I put on my gumboots and headed out to see what was happening! As I stood in the red gloop it squirted EVERYWHERE. It smelt like tomatos and I heard lots of squishing of tomatoes. So I went back home to look at the news. I read that it was the annual tomato pulp! So I joined the fun and got covered in tomatoes.

The Wildest Night EVER.

As I hopped into bed all I could hear was the sound of bucketing down rain and fierce wind! I tried to turn my lamp on but they wouldn't turn on! “Must be a power cut!” I said. The wind wrapped his hands around me as if I was a squishy getting held. The wind made me cold then thunder and lightning struck. I pulled the covers over my head in shock. The next morning I woke up and there was only a little bit of wind.

Spiderman

As I opened the door to New York City I heard some music!
I started to walk down town more confused! I kept seeing these rainbow pieces of confetti on the road. When I saw something big and red I was amazed!
As I was still staring at a big spiderman! Their was a massive crowd and I couldn't  any more see. But I could smell nice food.

FIREWORKS

As I peacefully walked through town I saw BIG balloons of orange smoke in the air. I was confused, It smelled like gas and it felt like nothing. I hurried along to where the thick karaka smoke was coming from. I saw LOTS of people all gathered and looking up at the smoke. As I stayed longer I learnt that it wasn't smoke, it was fireworks for the grand opening for the new museum! It was beautiful.

My Taniwha-Writing

For the past few weeks we have been practising descriptive language in our writing. We have been trying to'paint pictures with words'. We all got to invent our own taniwha. We all drew our own taniwha then we had to write about it and describe what it looks like, what we do with our taniwha and what our taniwha is like. Then we read our work to a buddy and they had a go at trying to draw our taniwha.

Create and Describe Your Own Creature
(Nogard)

WALT: be descriptive in our writing.

Look at the description of a Nogard.  Now Create and describe your own creature that you will then be able to read to a buddy so that they can draw it.  Your description must be as detailed and clear as possible so that when you share it with others they will be able to visualise and draw you creature. Use lots of adjectives (describing words - big, small, round, green).

You must .....

  • Have a name for your creature
  • Start from the big things and work your way to the smaller things
  • Describe the shapes
  • Describe its neck, body, tail, wings etc.
  • What does its head look like?Think about its eyes, nose, eyebrows, mouth, teeth
  • Describe its legs/flippers/fins etc.
  • What colours is it?
  • Any extra details on the body like scales, spikes etc.
  • Keep it simple and clear!
  • Use correct punctuation and spelling.
  • Check that your sentences make sense.

Remember that a good writer ‘paints’ pictures in their reader’s head with words.   This is what good descriptive writing does.

Parahau The Taniwha

I know a Taniwha named  Parahau.
Her  long round body is like a little saveloy. She has a circular head and curly wings. Her 2 wings sit on her back. Parahau has a medium sized tail and a curly mouth. She has round ears and a little triangle nose. She has sharp triangles at the top of her body and round scales along the bottom. She has 4 rectangle legs. Her light pink hoofs are really rare. Her body is emerald green as well as her head. She has  light blue legs and deep yellow wings. She lives in a magic forest and collects purple leaves. We meet at the Moana Lake she comes crashing down and she gives me the purple leaves that she has collected. We go high in the mountains and see Ranginui the godfather of the sky, he is always glad to see us. I always love seeing Ranginui’s birds. We travel to different countries every month. When we go under water Parhau always glows bright yellow - kowhai. Parawhau can talk to the sea animals but they are always scared of Parhau because she is bright yellow. Every week we have fun and go to different places.
