Space Timeline Reading Task

Space timeline Reading tasks.

Term 2 Weeks 5-6

Purpose of this reading activity is to: increase our knowledge of space exploration
and understand how our knowledge and ideas about space have changed over
time (science). We are also learning to read non-fiction texts and use our writing
skills to share our understanding of this topic and our ideas (literacy).
Throughout this task we will need to use the skills of
‘Thinking’ and using ‘Language, Symbols and Text.’

Learning Intentions
I am learning to skim and scan text to identify the main ideas.
I am learning to locate the key sentences and questions in texts.

Focus

We are looking at using non-fiction text to increase our knowledge in our science topic; SPACE.
Your aim is to read and understand the timeline reading and use this knowledge to complete the reading
activity below.

First, Read the timeline cards. Click here for the space timeline pdf

Second, We will discuss what you have read. This will be a good time to ask questions about anything
you are unsure of.

Third, do your reading tasks.

Fourth, complete your reading activity. Remember to proofread, check spelling and punctuation.
Then do a self assessment and a peer assessment. Check it with a teacher.

Reading Activity

View and read the space timeline on the classroom walls. Think about how how
our theories/ideas and understandings about the universe and Earth’s place in it
has changed over time.

Answer the following questions.
Your answers need to be full sentences.
After you have answered all the questions please put them in chronological
order (time order, oldest first)

Data sent to the
Earth showed that Pluto is fifty
miles larger than was first thought. 2015

YOUR OPINION
After reading this information...

  1. Who do you think made the biggest contribution to our understanding of
  2. space? Why? (summarising key ideas)
I think  that Galileo is the most important person because he was first person to
Invent the telescope. That invention started it all! And he also found out lots more.
    2) What do you think was the most important machine or invention in helping
us investigate space? Why? (summarising key ideas)
I think that the spaceship was the best invention because  you got to explore
outer space and then they discovered other planets. I think that rocket ships
were the biggest improvement  to finding what's out at space.
    3) What would you like to investigate about space? Why?
I want to investigate more about the center of the milky way. I want to know
some theories. I think its a black hole but nobody knows! I also want to
know about traveling to other solar systems and other galaxies.

As NASA’s Kepler Space Telescope science team was wrapping up a
10-day trial run, they saw something that bordered on the unbelievable:
the telescope's first detection of a rocky, Earth-sized world outside our solar
system. Click here for the 1st website. At this website I found planets that are
outside of our Solar System Here's the website Nasa discovers new solar system

The oceans play an important role in Earth's weather. Rain clouds normally form
over warm ocean water. When strong winds cause this warm water to move,
the clouds and storms move, too.
In normal conditions, winds above the Pacific Ocean gently push warm water west.
That warm water travels from the west coast of South America all the way to
Indonesia. As the warm water moves, cold water from the bottom of the ocean
slowly rises up to take its place

Forever Never Land is one of Saturn's 64 moons. It's an amazing moon but it comes with dangers. Saturn is a gas planet so whenever there is a storm every person and creature has to wear gas masks. Forever Never land is also amazing because when you enter you stay that age forever and when you leave it goes back to normal.
Scientists have only just discovered Forever Never Land  because they only thought Saturn had 63 moons BUT they did not know Forever Never Land was orbiting as well.

Forever Never Land Has an invisible force field and takes a lot of fuel to get through. When your rocket ship gets through and lands, you feel amazing and happy. To get out of  Forever Never Land you have to find the Black hole that is in a mysterious river and go though it carefully.

The people on Forever Never Land have tawa (purple) skin and long braided hair, Forever Never Land  Also has dinosaurs but they are harikoa (happy)  because the moon  releases gases from the moon's core. Nobody knows  what this gas is but they call it joy gas.

Forever Never Land is a Dark orange colour. People are bringing lots of supplies to help build and make a amazing village for this land.

The water is the same but is purple and has lots more vitamins  for your body. People that live on Forever Never Land swim in the lakes and rivers so they get lots more vitamins.

People want to go to this land because you can noho (stay) your age forever, ride a massive dinosaur and feel AMAZING.

My legs are strong and long. My legs twist and turn like nobody's watching. My legs are injured easily because I mōwhiti(Jump) and climb. My legs are tannish because I run and walk outside. My legs are tanned like the Gold Coast Beach. My legs keep me rīrā (strong) and take me places. The best part of me are my legs because they are mine and mine to keep.
