Camp Letter

20 November 2018

Dear Mum,

Thank you for coming on camp and dedicating your time! The thing I enjoyed the most was the
hike. It was fun because there were so many people around and a cool atmosphere.
My favorite meal was the burgers, because I haven't had them in a while.

My favourite activity was the Squawk Squad because we had to walk up steep stairs and
find morse codes to figure it out. I also enjoyed the river crossing. My biggest challenge
was the water activity because my fingers were getting cold and I was getting drenched.

My question for you is what was your favourite activity?
Thank you for coming and spending lots of time on cooking food, and helping with activities

Ngā mihi
Yours sincerely

Lily

Descriptive Writing

At the moment in class, we have been writing on descriptive writing. We have been using pictures to give us ideas of what to write about. Here is my work.

Bring Your Pet To School Day!

Hi, my name is Apple, and today was bring your pet to school day. So I brought along Terry!
When I was walking to school with Terry, sadly I created traffic jams.
There was a lot of calling out and tooting of horns. Terry and I had to quicken our pace to ease the problem. When I got to school my teacher was quite alarmed, and all of the children crowed around Terry, as his footsteps thudded around the class!

Where was I going fit Terry amongst all of these other pets? How was I going to feed him?
He could eat any of these kids pets for morning tea! Even his footsteps created a shudder through class. But to my relief, Terrys best friend arrived at school just as the bell went to ring. Both of them filled half the playground!

When Terry and I started to walk to class from morning tea, the principle quicky paced her way up to us and said, “EXCUSE ME. A dinosaur is not an appropriate animal to bring to school or... Should I say, creature, to bring to school!” “No, you call him a creature you should call him Terry,” I replied. “Well then.. You must take him home this instant!”
She told me. So I walked Terry home and apologised to Terry for the rude words he had heard
the principal say.

Terry is my pet dinosaur, but the school obviously isn't ready for him!

My Bird Report

Introduction Image result for kereruImage by FlamingText.com
The Kereru is a New Zealand bird also known as the New Zealand pigeon This bird is a really well-known bird.

What Does It Look Like
Kererū are big birds,  they are actually one of the largest pigeons in the world.
They weigh about 650g and are around 50 cm long. It has a multicolor greyish back,
with a white `singlet`. On its back, wing, head and tail feathers you can also see colors
such as purple, green and blue. Their feet and beak are a light brown and red color also
they have red eyes.

Where does it live
The Kereru lives mostly in the forests. The Kereru is a native animal which means it only lives
in New Zealand. They can also be found in parks and gardens.

What does it eat
In the winter it can fly up to 25 km an hour to gardens to feed, not just on fruit, but on flowers,
native trees, broom, willow, guava, and privet. In the forest the love to eat flowers leaves and
berries.

Breeding
In spring, Male kereru show off to the female kereru with amazing flying displays.
Kereru build a very flimsy nest of twigs for their one egg. At the bottom of the nest,
it is so weak you would be surprised it didn't fall through. Kereru care for their chicks a lot.
While the chick is small they feed it on milk they produce in their stomach,
then later on fruit pulp.

Threats.
Loss of habitat because they don't have enough forest/trees to live in. Their eggs and nestlings are at risk of dying because of stoats, black rats, possums, and feral cats because they eat the chicks and eggs.                                                       By Lily

How To Reduce Plastic Waste

The last two weeks we have been learning about plastic. On our rubbish topic we also thought it would be cool to make beeswax wraps and fabric bags. We made our beeswax wrap so that we could replace glad wrap in our lunchbox. Our fabric bags are good for the environment, you can use them in supermarkets or any where else.
I enjoyed making both of theses things because I use them a lot.

How to make beeswax wrap: Put baking paper down then put cotton down on the baking paper now grate beeswax, and sprinkle it on the cotton, then put another piece of baking paper down on the cotton. The last part is to get an iron and melt all the beeswax; after the beeswax is all melted you put it on a rack and let it dry for a minute.

Keeping Ourselves Safe

At school we have been learning how to keep ourselves safe. constable Jos and Terri came around to help us with our learning. Here are some of the things we learnt.

Play Summary

Play Summary - Term 3 Weeks 1-2

For the next two weeks you are working in groups to practise and perform a
play. This is using our oral language and reading skills in literacy.
Our key competency focus is participating and contributing.

For writing your task is to summarise the main events in your play in
three paragraphs. You must plan your writing first but it is up to you how you
do your planning.  You must also write a fourth paragraph about your
experience of practising and performing your play.

Yr 6
I am learning to organise my text into paragraphs which begin with a main idea and contain
supporting information/detail.
I am learning to make links across paragraphs.
I am learning to use basic punctuation accurately.
I am learning to use dialogue punctuation accurately.

Yr 7
I am learning to use a range of different planning styles.
I am learning to plan my writing to suit the purpose of my writing.
I am learning to organise my ideas into paragraphs where the ideas are clearly related
and where there are links within and between paragraphs.
I am learning to use basic punctuation accurately in my writing.
I am learning to use complex punctuation to enhance my writing e.g. colons : and
semi-colons ; , and parentheses ().

Success Criteria
I will be successful when I can/have
-summarised the play in three paragraphs
-made links across my paragraphs
-used some basic and complex punctuation correctly (speech marks).
Once you have finished your writing highlight these success criteria green if you have
met them and can show them in your work. Highlight green in your work where you have met
these success criteria.

In the first part of the story, Jack and his Mother are poor and they have a pet
cow. Jack's mother said, “Jack we need to sell our cow for some money.
Jack said, “Ok I take him to town and sell him.”

In the second part of the story, Jack walked to the market; and and man said to
him, “Are you coming to town to sell that cow?” and Jack said, “Yes I am.” So
the old man said, “I'll give you some magic beans for the cow.” “Ok.” said Jack.
Jack went home and told his mother, and she was very angry and threw the
beans on the dirt and told him, “GO TO YOUR ROOM!” Jack went to his room
and fell asleep.

At the end of this story, the next morning Jack's mother ran into his room and
yelled in excitement, “LOOK OUTSIDE.” Jack got up and looked out his window
and saw a giant beanstalk.
He ran outside and climbed the beanstalk. When he got up there he stole
golden eggs and a golden hen from the gaint. Then when he was about to
climb down he heard a loud noise he looked up and saw  the giant, his mother
from down below grabbed a axe and chopped down the beanstalk and Jack
got down safely. Jack and his mother were rich because they had the hen.

Our teamwork was good because we worked well together and let each
other speak, and we all participated well and worked well to make props.
We brought in what we needed for the props and practiced well.
